The Upgrade Ultimatum: Can You Stay on PrestaShop 1.7 Forever?

By Christian Fillion E-Commerce Strategist & Founder, Marketing Media

If you are running a store on PrestaShop 1.7, you have likely heard the whispers. Or maybe your current agency has shouted it at you:

“PrestaShop 1.7 is End of Life! You must migrate to PrestaShop 8 immediately, or you will get hacked!”

Usually, this warning is followed by a quote for a $25,000 migration project.

At Marketing Media, we take a different approach. We believe in ROI, not forced obsolescence.

The short answer is: Yes, you can keep your PrestaShop 1.7 store. The long answer is: Only if you treat it like a vintage classic car.

You can drive a classic car daily, but you can’t just take it to Jiffy Lube. You need a specialist mechanic, premium parts, and a defensive driving strategy. Here is the reality of maintaining a “Legacy” store in a modern world.

The “End of Life” Myth

When software goes “End of Life” (EOL), it doesn’t mean your website stops working. It simply means the creators (PrestaShop) stop releasing official security patches.

Most agencies panic. We see it differently. Stability is an asset.

PrestaShop 1.7 is a mature, stable codebase. If your store is currently generating revenue, converting customers, and fulfilling orders smoothly, ripping out the foundation to upgrade to Version 8 creates unnecessary risk and downtime.

However, staying put requires a “Legacy Defense” Strategy.

The 3 Pillars of “Legacy” Survival

If you want to avoid the cost of migration, you must invest in Fortification. You cannot run a vanilla 1.7 install anymore. You need:

1. The PHP Problem (and Solution)

The biggest risk isn’t PrestaShop itself; it’s the server language (PHP) it runs on. PrestaShop 1.7 usually requires older versions of PHP (7.2 or 7.4), which are no longer supported by the PHP community.

  • The Risk: Running old PHP is dangerous.
  • The Solution: We move our 1.7 clients to Hardened PHP environments (using CloudLinux or specialized hosting). These act as a time capsule, applying security patches to old PHP versions so you can run your legacy store safely.

2. The “Virtual” Patch

Since PrestaShop won’t send you security updates, we have to build them.

  • WAF (Web Application Firewall): We place a firewall (like Cloudflare Enterprise or StackPath) in front of your store. If a vulnerability is discovered in 1.7, we don’t rewrite your code; we simply update the Firewall rules to block anyone trying to exploit it. It is a “Virtual Patch” that keeps you safe without touching your core files.

3. The “Code Freeze” Protocol

The number one way to break a stable 1.7 store is to install a new module designed for PrestaShop 8.

  • The Strategy: We implement a Code Freeze. We stop experimenting. We maintain what works. If you need a new feature, we custom-code it carefully rather than risking a third-party plugin that might conflict with your older architecture.

When Is It Finally Time to Move?

We are pragmatic, but we aren’t magicians. There comes a time when staying on 1.7 costs more than upgrading. You should only migrate when:

  1. The “Performance Cap”: You need the speed of PHP 8.2 (which PrestaShop 8 supports) to handle massive traffic spikes, and 1.7 just can’t keep up.
  2. The “Feature Gap”: Your competitors are using AI tools or checkout flows that physically cannot integrate with 1.7.
  3. The Cost Curve: When the monthly cost of “Legacy Support” exceeds the monthly amortization of a new build.

Don’t Upgrade Out of Fear. Upgrade Out of Strategy.

If an agency is bullying you into a migration you can’t afford, stop.

Your asset can continue to yield returns for years if it is properly maintained. We manage millions of dollars in revenue on PrestaShop 1.7 stores that are faster and more secure than many brand-new builds.

It’s not about the version number. It’s about the architecture.

If you want to stay on 1.7 safely, let’s audit your defenses.
